Origin   The Collection   Exposition

Origin:

During the 1920s and 1930s the Jakob Bengel company was one of the leading producers of Art Déco Jewelry. This fact actually wasn't known until recently, because the jewelry was mostly produced for the French market and sold there as "made in France". Thanks to the rediscovered design and models books the origin of the jewelry is now completely traceable.

It is thanks to the relentless commitment of the collector Dr. Heribert Händel and his wife Dr. Margarethe Händel, that this part of the Idar-Obersteiner Design and Industry history has been rediscovered. They picked up the search for the Bengel jewelry and after long years of extensive research retraced it's origin back to the Jakob Bengel Company.

An outstanding and much noticed exposition during the culture festival "Idar-Oberstein shines" in 2002 presented around 160 pieces from the personal collection of the Händel couple in the Museum Idar-Oberstein. At this occasion an extensive catalogue with 300 pages was published.

Due to the growing demand of original Jakob Bengel jewelry the Jakob Bengel foundation has restarted production of select pieces of the Art Déco collection dating from 1928 to 1935. The jewelry is produced using the original designs, tools and work methods of those days and in the same original factory. Each piece is engraved and certified, the stones used are made out of the artificial matter galalith just like the original pieces of the period.
